Baldwin Pianos

Baldwin Upright & Grand Pianos

Baldwin Pianos

The company got its start in 1862, when beloved Cincinnati-based piano teacher Dwight Hamilton Baldwin launched a Decker Brothers piano dealership. In 1866, he hired Lucien Wulsin as a clerk, and the two eventually became partners in the venture, at the time named D.H. Baldwin & Company.
The most important aspect of technology in Baldwin pianos is their scale design. The scale design is the “recipe” for the piano that consists of the materials used and all specifications, including the exact shape of the sound boards, the placement of the bridges and ribs, the length of the strings and the thickness of the rims and bracing. But it doesn’t stop there. The Accu-just hitchpins and Synchro-tone bass strings used on Artist Grands are also important Baldwin innovations.
Fans of Baldwin pianos love the big “American” sound of the instruments, particularly in the bass area, and the clear “bell-like” quality in the high treble end. Today Baldwin pianos are owned and operated by Gibson, one of the most recognizable names in music. Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz is determined to bring the same success to Baldwin since its acquisition of the company in 2001. Using top quality materials from Europe and America, the Baldwin piano is shocking the world again with its quality and tone.

Baldwin Upright Pianos

All Baldwin uprights use only the highest quaility materials. Their Mapes or Roslau strings boast a longer speaker length for the breed, enabling a deep bass and rich tone, enhanced by the purity and balance of 100% virgin wool hammers. Also, Baldwin uses many of the same premium tonewoods and top-flight components that are employed in its top-of-the-line professional pianos, including a spruce soundboard, solid two-ply beech and hard-maple bridge, spruce ribs and back frame, and 19-ply laminated hard maple pinblock. Furthermore, Baldwin’s Full Blow™ Direct Action contributes to a superior feel and response, for an extremely expressive playing experience.

Baldwin builds 7 upright models in the Gibson-owned factory: BP1, BP3, BP5, B243, B442, B342, and the B252

BP5

With its timeless elegance and versatile sound and performance, Baldwin’s BP5 is the perfect piano for situations that require vertical dimensions, but desire grand-like tone. The new BP5 boasts nearly as much soundboard area as Baldwin’s celebrated R1 grand, to provide maximum tonal depth with vertical convenience, while looking great in the process in classic high-polish Ebony or Rosewood finish.

B243

Quality, efficiency and perfect performance meet head-on in this distinct studio upright. Rarely do you see such a combination of playability and durability, designed to meet the demanding needs of today’s versatile pianists. First introduced in 1939, the Baldwin B243 models are the company’s best-selling of all-time, with nearly 500,000 units sold worldwide. The multi-ply pinblock is a variation of the one from Baldwin’s legendary concert grand pianos, and is constructed from premium hard rock maple to deliver unmatched tuning stability.

B252

If you’re looking for the voice of a concert grand in a smaller body then look no further than Baldwin’s classic B252. The B252 is modeled after Baldwin’s largest vertical piano, and provides as much total soundboard area as Baldwin celebrated R1 grand piano. This piano features a special design that supports longer bass strings, which are more common in taller uprights and produce a rich and very resonant tone normally associated with a grand piano.

Baldwin Grand Pianos

Any time you buy a Baldwin grand piano you expect a beautiful and classic cabinet design along with warm tone and exceptionally responsive action. To ensure integrity, each part of our grands are carefully chosen for its uniformity and performance. The soundboard and rib material are made from solid Alaskan Sitka spruce, while the bridge is made from hard maple and precision notched by hand. Each key is crafted of solid Alaskan Sitka spruce with ebony wood sharp keys, and individually weighted for the most responsive action possible. Abel German hammers sound high- quality Roslau strings, and a 17-ply hard maple pin block offers a lifetime of precision performance. The three traditional pedals – soft, sustain and sostenuto – are constructed of solid brass, and the fallboard utilizes a slow-close mechanism for a smooth, sure motion when in use. This makes it easier and safer for younger players.
